We beg to acknowledge receipt of your favour of

yesterday and to inform you in reply that we have already cabled to New York to ascertain if the Texas Company is

agreeable to our appointing Hessrs. Reiss & Co. as our

agents for their business in petroleum oil and products (kerosene and wax, &c.) at Hongkong and Canton.

There appears to be some delay in telegraphic communication with the United States at present, but

as soon as we are in a position to do so, we shall ap-

proach you and H.E. the Governor again.
